What is Papa Woody Wax? |
Papa Woody Waxes are derived from two distinct branches of wax families. The original branch was the blue colored petroleum hydrocarbon “Industrial Wax” that included “Red Dot” as a fluorinated version. We still make it because it is an outstanding wax and “Fluoro Red Dot” has many satisfied fans. Most of our customers, however, are riding the synthetic waxes that make up the second Papa Woody branch. The synthetics are simply not made from petroleum hydrocarbons. The color- coded “Red Dot” wax chip means the wax is fluorinated.

Our synthetic waxes are harder than the waxes available from your local snowboard shop, which means one wax job will last longer when waxing with Papa Woody Synthetic Wax than a wax job using a non-synthetic wax available from your local snowboard shop.

What does "Fluoro" mean?
Fluoro means the wax is fluorinated. This means there are lubricants in the wax that will help you ride faster than you would with a non-fluorinated wax. Our customers who race love our Fluoro waxes and keep coming back for more.

What makes Papa Woody Waxes different?
Papa Woody Waxes are derived from two distinct wax branches. The original branch was the blue petroleum hydrocarbon “Industrial Waxes” that included “Red Dot” as a fluorinated version. We still make it because it works well in mid to warm conditions and several of our long time customers continue to ask for it. Most of our customers, however, are riding the synthetic waxes that make up the second Papa Woody branch. The synthetics are not made from petroleum hydrocarbons. We use a color-coded “Red Dot” wax chip to differentiate the waxes that contain fluorination from those that do not.

Why do you add lubricants to your waxes?
We believe that you need to start with a great wax without enhancements or your wax is doomed for failure. Both branches of the Papa Woody line have no problem standing on their own and you can expect a great time on either the non-fluoro synthetic wax or the non-fluoro blue industrial hydrocarbon wax. Enhancements are available in the form of high-tech, high-slip plastics such as fluoro and PTFE powders as well as other lubricants such as micro graphite powder. When these enhancements are added to the molten wax, the wax becomes a matrix that suspends the micro-particles and disperses them evenly across the base. When you ride the enhanced waxes, as the wax wears, you will be uncovering the next little particle making it available for snow contact. Papa Woody uses lab quality graphite in the smallest particle size available. Numerous little particles will come into contact with the snow more than a few large particles will, which means our lubricants will help you ride faster than the fluorinated waxes available from other wax manufacturers.

Are the Papa Woody Synthetic Waxes made from the same stuff as the Blue Industrial Hydrocarbon Waxes?
No. Synthetic waxes are similar to petroleum hydrocarbon paraffins in crystal structure but are much harder and more durable. Synthetic waxes can be formed from chemicals such as ethylene glycol for polyethylene wax or from catalytic processes that convert coal to synthetic oil. Papa Woody blends synthetic waxes of several different densities along with modifier waxes to produce the Sierra Synthetic line. This wax blend has demonstrated a very wide temperature range and probably the best durability of any waxes in the Papa Woody Wax line. The synthetic waxes are a little trickier to apply than most off-the-shelf waxes, but the ride is juiced so this is what we have been riding exclusively for several years. The synthetics are excellent cold powder waxes as well as great all around performance waxes. Although Papa Woody tries for the most durability possible in a wax, it is still wax. This means it will still wear off based on the firmness of the snow. Hard, icy spring mornings are tough on all waxes. Soft powder mornings will not leave any marks on this wax. Put some Papa Woody Synthetic Wax on your board, go ride the hell out of it and you be the judge.

Who is Papa Woody?
Papa Woody is a Reno local who has been riding the trees in the Tahoe Basin since 1980. We developed and heavily tested Papa Woody Waxes right here in Tahoe in every condition that you can imagine. We created Papa Woody Waxes because all of the waxes that are available at your local snowboard shop just don't get it done. We're sick of all those 4 run wonders. Papa Woody Wax is our answer to all that cheap crap.
